Elise Kohl is a recognized
and critically acclaimed New England artist that
has built up a fan following from her fun and festive
water color paintings.
Ms. Kohl’s earliest influences
have been painting the sea and land as a young girl;
after studying with several AWS masters, she focused
on watercolor landscapes including painting a private
collection of watercolor portraits of life in rural
China after her Asia Trip.
Her roots in the rugged, remote
Gaspé region of Quebec led her to paint another
series- villagers digging clams, cattle, birds,
and domestic fowl. One of her series,”Fish
and Chicks” is in bright, noisy colors. “Roosters”
displays her playful, humorous side- male creatures,
are often foolish, yet always in control.
Yet there is a mysterious, sometimes serious side
to her paintings. A rusty Canadian National snowplow
lies forgotten in an abandoned rail yard. This remnant
of rail service of times past was once her lifeline
to the cities of Quebec and indeed all of Canada.
Elise’s expressionistic style was strongly
influenced by Phoebe Flory, whose watercolor portraiture
workshops she attended 1986 and 1987.
Elise Kohl exhales an intense, interior vision,
which is always off the beaten path. Her expressionistic
paintings are sometimes immense, always luminous,
always bursting with movement and energy. Some critics
say her work has a “power that lingers”.
During the 90’s Ms. Kohl taught several watercolor
workshops in Quebec. There she realized how the
stern religious education received by French-Canadians
who came of age in the 50’s still strongly
affected them. The experience awakened the ghost
in herself. She began painting a 22-painting series
of Catholic nuns, which she named “Chapelet
de Vie”(Rosary of Life).
Kohl is presently painting a second series, which
she simply calls “Fun Nuns”. Six have
been painted. Kohl wants the viewer of these paintings
to enjoy another aspect of life-playfulness. Ms.
Kohl has been active in art associations around
NH for many years. She was vice president of the
Nashua Art Assoc.in1985.In 1988-90 she served as
president of the New Hampshire Art Association.
